Some Tips For Preventing Hair Loss

If your hair is getting thin or if you are worried about losing your hair because baldness runs in your family then you may have asked yourself the question are there any good methods for preventing hair loss? People have been trying various methods to treat or prevent hair loss for centuries. Some are effective, some not so much. This article is going to explore some of the ways that people attempt to prevent hair loss and whether those ways are effective or not.

Some people believe that proper haircare can be effective in preventing hair loss. They believe that by normalizing the condition of their scalp whether it be dandruff, excessively oily or dry hair, exfoliating dead skin cells etc. that having a healthy scalp will prevent baldness. Many people also believe that increased blood flow to the scalp will help keep hair follicles healthy and prevent hair loss. Men in India have been performing head massages for over 4000 years to decrease stress, improve overall health, and promote hair growth.

Herbal supplements and treatments are also popular in the quest to prevent hair loss. There are probably hundreds of various herbal remedies that are supposed to promote hair growth but one that's quite interesting is Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is believed to block or inhibit dihydrotestosterone or DHT which is known to be a major cause of male pattern baldness.

In addition to haircare and herbal supplements there are also medications. Minoxidil is the only FDA approved ingredient for topical solutions that is proven to re-grow hair. Like Saw Palmetto, Minoxidil works by blocking DHT but Saw Palmetto is an herbal supplement which has not been approved by the FDA. The only other option for a medication to regrow hair is Propecia. Propecia is the only FDA approved pill to prevent and treat hair loss and also works to reduce DHT, the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness.

There are many possible methods for preventing hair loss from head massages to prescription medication. What works for one person may not always work for another and it's best to consult a health care professional before starting any kind of treatment.
